My roof is leaking in the family room! Right down the middle of the back portion of the room…for those who have seen the room, it’s the lower portion of the roof that is covered in wood slats. Fortunately, it’s dripping in the middle…so far. That means I haven’t had to do a massive moving of furniture and only have a few plastic containers catching the drips. Patrick went up on the roof and swept off any standing water and covered the center section with a tarp. I think the installation of the new doors and windows caused the tar paper to spread apart in the center leaving an area for water to seep through.
While this is a royal pain in the butt, I have an 8 year guarantee for materials and labor for the roof that was installed in 2002. So I’ve got a call in to the roofing company, but don’t expect they’ll be rushing over here tonight in the middle of the huge storm that’s predicted. I just hope we can keep the drips contained in the center section until the roofers are able to do their thing.

Well, it’s Wednesday morning and the leak has gotten worse! One of my sofas is soaking wet as the leak traveled across the room and dumped water all night. The roofer is supposed to be here any time now. Let’s hope he’s able to do something.
The roofers are finishing up. They resealed the center section and are now covering it in plastic. They will return when the rain stops and things are predicted to be dry for a few days and will retar the back section. They said they don’t feel it was “burned” enough when it was installed. My impression is that the tar is put on and then heated with some kind of a hand held tool that causes the tar to harden and create something like a solid covering over the entire area. They said these types of roofs generally last 5-10 years without having to patch/redo them. I still have 6 years on the warranty, so they’ll be out here again if they don’t get it right this time!

I know your pain, Cathy. I got home last night to discover that the roof leaks in my bedroom, right in front of my closet door. 🙁
I called the apartment manager this morning and she promised that someone would be out on Friday. I’m wondering if I should stick around on Friday, just to make sure.
Only leaked in a couple of places (along about a 1 and a half foot section.) I hope it doesn’t get worse, though.
From someone who has been through this more often than I care to remember, Phil, I highly recommend you make sure this is repaired asap. It will never get better–only worse and worse as time goes on!
I remember the days of pots and various tupperware containers strewn about the room. I’m hoping it hadn’t gotten that bad, but can’t imagine that it did, given that it was mostly fixed… mostly.
